In a recent edition of This American Life, link here, (http://www.thisamericanlife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?sched=1308), one of the episodes talked about coerced confessions obtained by the Iranian Government. They would edit both the written and taped confessions for publication and broadcast. Mention was made that these confessions were aired and published so often, that even though citizens knew the confessions were coerced, they started to believe aspects of them.
This got me thinking about our current healthcare debate. All that reform opponents have to do is fill the airwaves, papers and blogs with lies, and if they do it enough, people really start to believe them.
It just goes to show that a government is only as honest (or corrupt) as its’ people allow it to be.
